READY.. SET… …… …. LOVE!
This week in Knoxville, you couldn’t turn a corner without hearing something about the massive snow headed our way. I loved overhearing conversations at the grocery store about it. My favorite comment by far was from the sweetest old man to his sweet old wife, “Honey you only got us 2 gallons [of milk]?” He was so worried and thought for sure he would be snowing in for weeks. Heck, we all did! Of course there are the skeptical ones… myself included who have been jaded by misjudgments of meteorologists over the years. It will snow all around us here in the Knoxville bubble and we never see anything but a “dusting”. So, when I heard this week it could be “1-12″ inches.. first I laughed because that’s such a HUGE range.. then I hoped… then I doubted. Bread has been flying off the shelves all week and I’ve loved watching the hysteria! It’s fun! In all seriousness I’m a little kid trapped in an adult’s body and everyone who knows me is certain of this fact. When it snows… I feel like the world is full of possibilities!I have to contain my excitement as not to seem like too much of a kid to the point where it’s weird. No lie!
Those of you who live here know that it did in fact snow! Of course 4 inches is no where near 12.. but it is just enough for me! I suited up in my snowboarding gear, drug my husband out of the house and headed to the spot I used to sneak to sled with my dad many years ago. It’s not as big as I remember it.. but still just as fun! Of course we took the camera in an effort to capture the best moments in our lives… and here is what happened next!

Once we got back home we thought we’d play a little friendly game of speed Scrabble! The best! He beats me EVERY SINGLE time!

Welcome to my first Bridal Session blog post! However you found yourself here… feel welcomed and appreciated for stopping by! I love what I do and I hope that it shows in every image you find here.
In each of my wedding packages I include a bridal session. I never thought much of them until my own wedding (3.5 years ago to the most amazing man ever..). It was included in the wedding package I purchased and I’m thankful for it; only because the day of the wedding there wasn’t much chance for great pictures of my dress. My dress was my TOP favorite detail about our wedding. It was by Ramona Keveza and the moment I saw it I almost cried. Of course I couldn’t order one because I simply wasn’t paying $4000 for my bridal gown so the WONDERFUL WONDERFUL people at Wedding Wonderland, here in Knoxville, sold me the one off the floor. Yes, it had been tried on before and needed a little TLC in the form of deep cleaning… but it was my very own Ramona Keveza and it was perfect! I adore this dress and will occasionally still try to put it on from time to time.. although it’s not even close to fitting. ;(
For this particular bridal session I had a very good friend Heather (great Knoxville stylist check out her website –> HeatherKerley.com) throw on MY wedding dress for a model shoot! The headpiece used for the session was FABULOUS and on loan from, again, the wonderful people at Wedding Wonderland. She looked so beautiful and is perfectly photogenic! I owed her a VENTI Starbucks for standing in the freezing temps for hours! In most of the shots it’s actually snowing and I had to edit out the chill bumps! Not only that, but the wind was INSANE! I’m posting a few funny wind shots at the end for your enjoyment. Heather, you are truly a GREAT friend!
We had various locations in mind, but only ended up using 2 due to the weather: her backyard, her house and a scrap yard I’ve had my eye on for a while. When we were shooting in the scrap yard one of the workers walked up and asked if he could take a picture of us with his phone. What he said next was my favorite part of the day, “My wife would never believe me if I didn’t take this picture.. huh, huh”. I love my job… that I get to break the norms with this fascinating little piece of machinery.. my Canon.
I wanted to also use this post to let my 2010 brides know that they can think outside the box for their shoots. Nothing is off limits! Go crazy you guys!!

stunning!!

this picture was tough to get! I think Heather and I both cringe when we look at it! Heather is surrounded by sticker bushes and we kept getting stuck!! Note to self.. do NOT take an afghan into a patch of sticker bushes. Just don’t do it.

WIND PICTURES AS PROMISED!!

So much has been going on here in the office, but not much to do with pictures! Hench, the lack of blogging lately.. I’ve been cooking up some blog posts that are non photo related that I’ll be releasing soon!
In this time I’ve been thinking about the question “what kind of photographer do I want to be?” After my first wedding last May, I was hooked and love nothing more that to capture people in love and help
tell their story to the world. After all, isn’t that what this business is all about? Story telling? In this thought process I’ve been thinking, “Okay, I know I want to be a wedding photographer. I know I DO NOT want
to take pictures of families in front of their Christmas trees ever again (loved loved loved the families I met, but that is just NOT my style). I loved shooting seniors and will take a few of those this year. Do I want to
be a family photographer?” I’ve battled with this one a lot. Over the last few months I’ve taken about 20% of the family sessions I’ve been contacted about… trying to decide if this is where I want to go. Through all the
questions I’ve found that I will be taking family sessions, but a very limited number. Once March, April, May – August roll around I’ll be booked for weddings, engagement sessions and bridal sessions and will resume
family stuff come October. All that to say, yes.. I will be taking limited family sessions through March. As far as April goes… we will see.
There’s such a great mental process going on here in the Hensley house
regarding this photography thing. I feel like a completely different photographer than was sitting here 2-3 months ago. I still don’t think I’ve reached “artisthood” and not sure that I ever will. When I think about
an artist, I think about my beautiful sister, Kayla. She can pick up a paint brush, without any formal training, and a few hours into listening to The Clash.. a literal masterpiece emerges. There is something to be
said about the difference in talent and giftedness. I feel that my growing ability to wield my camera and see things through the lens that not everyone sees.. is a talent in development. Anyone can be talented in
anything they practice incessantly and out of that a passion will form.. or a passion precedes the hard work. Someone who is gifted doesn’t really have to work all that hard. Like, Kayla.. she is a gifted painter, drawer,
collager (just made that word up, thank you). They wake up knowing how to do something better than anyone else out there. I’m not sure that I was truly gifted in anything.. I feel I have certain spiritual gifts that
have been revealed to me as I get older.. and we could talk about that topic for months.. so we won’t go there. All that to say… I feel like I’m emerging from this beautiful cocoon and my head is finally above water. I feel
completely confident in what I do. It took a lot of LONG-LATE-NIGHTS, HARD WORK packed days, an AMAZINGLY supportive hubby, my God and MANY MORE MAZING PEOPLE to get to this point. And it feels good.
I can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on in the next few days and I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! This is what I love.. put in blog form.
Meet, the Lays…. This family is seriously amazing and I can’t wait to work with them again! I’ll decide to not be a family photographer and then I’ll meet a family like this who change it all…

and I leave you with sweet feet!
